Levon Helm, drummer and singer of The Band, passed away from throat cancer last week. The outpouring of love directed his way over the last week, from every corner of the world, was remarkable. His family did an interesting thing too; they told the world before he died that he was in his final…

Eep Opp Ork Ah-Ah!

This song off of the forthcoming Cloud Nothings album is really hitting the spot for me right now. Quite a big departure from the lo-fi/pop punk of their first release. This one is more downcast and reminds me of late-80s/early-90s indierock.

I posted a recent Facebook comment regarding our policies with signing artists and found myself getting into a discussion of what the role of an independent label is in 2012, something I’ve oftened been asked about in interviews but have never really been able to elaborate on.

Basically, it…

Captured Tracks strikes gold again, this time with the debut single by Dive. This label can do absolutely no wrong right now. Dive is the side project of Zachary Cole Smith, of Beach Fossils. I, for one, hope that this single is more than just a one-off and that there is an LP somewhere down the line!

The Wolfhounds were one of the bands featured on the classic C86 compilation. This, I think, is by far their best track though and this isn’t the one that appears there. Absolutely love this song. Also worth thinking about, knowing that Kurt Cobain had almost definitely heard this, I’ve gotta say the opening guitar riff seems to have had a pretty big influence on his songwriting.

Absolutely loving Romantic Comedy, the new album from Big Troubles. This is their first for Slumberland Records and a listen to “Sad Girls”, the first single, will make it clear why this is an amicable pairing for both parties.

If you are at all like me, you thought that Girls’ self-titled 2009 release was merely an okay album boosted by a couple great songs (namely “Lust For Life”) and a wave of hype. However, out of curiosity I decided to check out Father, Son, Holy Ghost (their new one) today, and I was blown away. After one listen, I’d say that it’s a spectacular album and well worth your time. “Vomit” is the song that jumped out at me the most on first listen.
